This retrospective cohort study was conducted at an academic, tertiary care health system with a Level II pediatric trauma center in New Jersey, United States using medical records from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2017. 104 of the 110 potential participants were stratified by gestational age into preterm, early term or term groups. Included participants were diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome, initiated on morphine therapy as per hospital protocol, and had sufficient documentation of hospital stay. There was no minimum age of newborn or restrictions on maternal drug history. The primary outcome was the highest administered dose at each administration and highest daily dose of morphine. ANOVA statistical test with Tukey's post hoc analysis was used for the continuous primary endpoints. Linear regression was used within stratified groups to determine other impacting factors such as maternal drug history, caregiver involvement, and maternal drug abuse treatment program involvement.
